$500–$5,000. Common Biblical prints: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: Watanabe's warm, folk-art Biblical prints have a devoted collector base. Larger formats and earlier works command more.
The Egyptians drowning in the Red Sea — the moment after Moses' raised hand causes the parted waters to return and engulf the pursuing army — is the counterpart to the Israelites' crossing: the same miracle that delivers the people of God destroys those who sought to keep them enslaved. Watanabe's katazome stencil rendering of this scene gives the chaos and force of the returning waters the bold, powerful forms of the mingei tradition, the drowning figures depicted without cruelty but with the directness that his folk-art visual language demands.
