Description
Fishermen — whether the disciples mending their nets or the laborers of the Galilean fishing industry that provided the setting for so much of Jesus' ministry — appear repeatedly in Watanabe's work as figures who embodied the ordinary working humanity he prized. His katazome rendering of fishermen deploys the bold earth tones and simplified forms of the mingei tradition to present working men with dignity and directness, their labor given the same visual weight as any spiritual subject.
