$500–$5,000. Common Biblical prints: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: Watanabe's warm, folk-art Biblical prints have a devoted collector base. Larger formats and earlier works command more.
Dated 1967, Jesus walking on the sea — the Gospel of Matthew's account of Christ coming to the disciples across the stormy water of the Sea of Galilee at night — gives Watanabe a subject in which the supernatural and the natural are dramatically juxtaposed. His katazome stencil technique renders the sea in bold, dark blues and greens, the waves simplified to powerful shapes that register the storm's reality; the walking figure above the water is given the same physical solidity as the disciples in their boat, the miracle present in the narrative situation rather than in visual exception.
