Description

A figure in a wide-brimmed hat and patterned tunic stands in profile against a deep red-brown ground, one arm raised toward a cluster of white sheep or goats rendered as simplified fish-boned shapes at right. Bold, flat black outlines separate the figure and animals from the background, with small white and yellow accents (rosettes, dots, a bird) scattered across the composition. "Shepherd," a 1962 woodblock print by Sadao Watanabe, uses this stylized, folk-art-like patterning and limited palette of red, black, white, and touches of yellow throughout.
