Dated 1970, the Holy Family — Mary, Joseph, and the infant Jesus as a domestic unit, the extraordinary divinity of one member surrounded by the ordinary human care of the other two — is among Watanabe's most warmly rendered subjects. Executed on crumpled paper, the print's textured surface gives the domestic scene a physical reality suited to its subject: the holy family not as theological abstraction but as people living the daily life of a carpenter's household in an occupied country.
