Description
The 1960 Resting, Paris shows a figure—possibly a woman or street person—in the repose that Saito observed throughout his Paris stays. The combination of a resting human form with a Parisian architectural background gave him two of his most productive formal elements in a single composition. The wet stone of Paris in autumn, a person seated against a wall or bench, the compressed urban space collapsing figure and ground into a single geometric statement.
