The pansy—viola tricolor—is a small, vivid flower with a notably expressive face-like pattern at the center of each bloom, a subject that appears occasionally in Saito's output alongside his more characteristic temple and figure work. His treatment of botanical subjects maintained the same reductive logic: the flower's form simplified to its essential geometry, the color relationship between petal and ground stated baldly rather than modulated through shading. Even a small garden flower received the full formal attention.
