Description
A second Matsushima variant from Saito's Oku no Hosomichi series, again reading Basho's celebrated bay through a reductive modernist lens. Where Hiroshige's Rokuju-yoshu Meisho Zue gives Matsushima as panoramic spectacle, Saito's prints isolate one or two pine-tufted islets and let the empty water carry the rest of the picture. The block's wood grain often runs horizontally through the sea passages, reinforcing the long, low rhythm of the bay; the islands are usually printed as solid sumi-black silhouettes whose pine canopies are carved with quick, almost calligraphic strokes. The format favors a horizontal oban or larger sheet, with washi paper whose absorbency softens the dense black areas. By rephrasing one of the most heavily depicted sites in Japanese art with such economy, Saito demonstrates the sosaku-hanga conviction that the printmaker's individual hand and design judgement should drive the image rather than received compositional formulae.
