The 1943 cat from the Gyoshi (Steady Gaze) series shows Saito at an early stage in his exploration of this subject—the same bold flat-plane approach, but with slightly more naturalistic detail than his later, more severely abstracted cat prints. The Gyoshi series title itself is telling: the steady gaze is both the cat's intense stare and the artist's own unblinking attention to form. Saito saw in the cat an embodiment of the kind of concentrated visual awareness he was trying to cultivate through printmaking.
