By 1972 Saito had refined his Aizu imagery to something approaching pure architecture—the steep thatched roofs of Fukushima farmhouses reduced to interlocking wedges of white, grey, and amber against the blank weight of a winter sky. Snow is not rendered literally here but implied through the geometric severity of form and the near-total suppression of texture. The work belongs to a lifelong meditation on the place of Saito's birth, a region he returned to again and again as both subject and emotional anchor.
