The 1960 Farm House with Persimmon Tree shows Saito adding a seasonal and botanical element to the Aizu farmhouse subject—the persimmon tree, a common feature of Tohoku farmyards, its bare winter branches hung with the bright orange fruits that remain after the leaves fall. This combination of domestic architecture and fruit tree was a traditional Japanese painting subject; Saito modernizes it through his geometric reduction while preserving the warmth of the orange persimmon against a snow-white or cool grey ground.
