Transfer: Arenbergpark

Arenbergpark is a public park in Vienna's 3rd district, notable for housing two of the surviving World War II Flak Towers within its grounds. Schneider's Transfer at this site situates printed imagery against a layered historical setting that combines 19th-century landscape design with 20th-century military concrete. The Transfer concept—linking the technical print-transfer operation to the cultural transfer between Japan and Austria—takes on additional weight at a park where multiple historical strata are already in evidence. Schneider's mokuhanga practice draws on the Tokyo Geidai workshop culture in which carved cherry-block impressions on washi remain a living tradition. Translating that practice to a Vienna park surface engages the question of how an Edo-period printmaking method speaks within a charged Central European public space. Across the Transfer series, the Arenbergpark site brings particular historical weight, the printed imagery functioning as an additional layer atop an already palimpsestic terrain.
