Transfer: Simmeringer Hauptstrasse

Part of Schneider's Transfer series, public art works locating woodblock imagery within Vienna's urban fabric. Simmeringer Hauptstrasse is the principal artery of the city's 11th district, a working-class quarter shaped by industrial and post-industrial development. The Transfer designation operates on multiple registers: the technical act of impressing a carved block onto a substrate; the migration of mokuhanga, an art form developed in Edo, into Central European street architecture; and the cultural translation Schneider has practised across his three-decade trajectory between Vienna and Tokyo. Site-specific outdoor presentation removes the image from the gallery wall and from the conventional washi support, foregrounding scale and weather-resistance constraints not encountered in studio editions. Schneider's printmaking reflects training under both the Vienna Academy etching tradition and Tokyo Geidai's mokuhanga lineage, and the Transfer works extend this dialogue into the realm of public commission and architectural intervention.
