Transfer: Erdbergstrasse

Erdbergstrasse is a long arterial in Vienna's 3rd district, threading through industrial, residential, and infrastructural zones. Schneider's Transfer intervention along this corridor extends the woodblock idiom into a stretch of city not framed by heritage protection or gallery context. The Transfer series operates at the intersection of Schneider's two formative printmaking lineages: the Vienna Academy's etching and intaglio tradition, where he completed his Magister Artium in 1991, and the mokuhanga workshop culture of Tokyo Geidai, where he subsequently completed an MFA and now holds a full professorship. Public-scale presentation shifts the technical demands of mokuhanga—usually printed onto absorbent washi with hand pressure from a baren—into the domain of architectural application. The series collectively reads as an inventory of Vienna sites translated through a Japanese printmaking grammar, asserting a cosmopolitan continuity between two cities whose printmaking schools have rarely had this degree of sustained dialogue.
