Transfer: Rabenhof III

Transfer: Rabenhof III is the third state in Schneider's series taken from the Rabenhof, a Gemeindebau in Vienna's 3rd district built 1925–1928 as a flagship of Red Vienna municipal housing. The print is produced by applying a carved block to the building's exposed brick, render, or ornamental brickwork and pulling the impression onto washi by hand, so the surface idiosyncrasies of the chosen wall — joint mortar, weathering, signage — register as the dominant compositional event. The roman numeral III indicates an iterative engagement with the same site, comparable to Yoshida Hiroshi's variant printings of a single block under different light. The work situates Schneider's training in both the Akademie Vienna printmaking department and Tokyo Geidai's School of Western Painting in direct contact with interwar social-housing architecture, and is characteristic of the documentary, location-specific orientation his Transfer cycle has maintained.
