Description
Early spring locates its bijin within the transitional weeks when winter has not fully released its grip but plum blossom and the first warming light announce the coming season. Iwata's composition likely features a woman in a kimono of subdued ground color enlivened by ume or other early-flowering motifs, her posture and accessories registering the residual chill. The print's tonal economy would depend on restrained color use, with bokashi gradations carrying any sky or backdrop and the figure's skin held in clean reserve against patterned cloth. This handling reflects the distinction Japanese seasonal sensibility draws between hatsuharu, the very opening of spring, and later phases of full bloom; Iwata's title commits the design to the earlier register. Among Iwata's seasonal bijin-ga, Early spring shares a subdued mood with his autumn and winter scenes rather than the fuller chromatic display of his late-spring or summer designs, attesting to his attention to the calendar's gradations rather than its broad divisions.
