- Date:
- 1936
- Medium:
- Woodblock print

Manjusri (Monju Bosatsu) from the "Pantheon of the Gandavyuha Sutra (Kegon-fu)" series of 1936 appears here in Munakata's first major engagement with the Kegon Sutra iconography, one year before the more extensive 1937 series. The Gandavyuha is the final book of the Avatamsaka Sutra, describing the pilgrim Sudhana's journey through fifty-three teachers to final enlightenment — a narrative structure that may have appealed to Munakata as a model for his own artistic development. Manjusri's sword of wisdom is the appropriate guide for such a journey.
