Description
"Rainy Season" (1956), from Shiko Munakata's series Scenes of the Season, is a hand-colored woodblock print built from bold black masses depicting jagged, angular mountain peaks rising above a cluster of thatched-roof structures. Passages of blue, yellow, pink, and violet pigment are brushed in behind and between the black forms, giving the sky and lower village area a saturated, glowing quality. The composition is dense and abstracted, with the black woodblock outlines dominating the frame; the print is signed in pencil and stamped with a red seal at the lower left.
