"Rainy Season" from the 1956 "Scenes of the Season" series — hand-colored — captures the Japanese tsuyu (rainy season), the weeks of heavy, persistent rainfall in June and July that are both dreaded and beloved: the rice needs the water, but the wetness and gray skies test human spirits. Munakata's rainy season would not be rendered with the delicate sadness of traditional Japanese rain imagery but with the direct, physical weight of water falling. The hand-coloring adds a layer of atmospheric warmth to the typically gray and green palette of the rainy season, the added color suggesting the quality of light filtering through clouds.
