"Woman with Hibiscus Blossom (Haibisukasu no onna)" — ink on paper, Showa period — is one of Munakata's female figures holding or accompanied by a flower, a compositional format he used throughout his career to give his women both a natural element and a symbolic charge. The hibiscus (haibisukasu, a tropical flower associated with Hawaii and the subtropics) suggests this print may date from his travels to Hawaii in the 1950s-60s, the tropical flower providing an exotic, high-color element against the woman's figure. The combination of female presence and flamboyant natural flower was among Munakata's most freely sensual subjects.
