$1,500–$12,000. Beauty prints by this artist are particularly sought after. Good bijin-ga prints: $4,000–$8,000. Key value factors: Shimura's refined bijin-ga have a devoted collector base. Earlier prints and rarer subjects command premiums.
From the 1953 series "Five Figures of Modern Beauties" (Gendai Bijin Fuzoku Gotai), this [oban](/glossary/oban) print depicts a woman amid a blizzard of falling cherry blossom petals. The Japanese title "Hana Fubuki" literally means "flower blizzard," describing the spectacular natural event when wind strips cherry trees of their petals in a single dramatic cascade. Shimura Tatsumi surrounds his figure with swirling pink and white petals, her kimono and hair becoming part of the floral storm. The image merges the beauty of the woman with the beauty of the season's most celebrated moment, neither fully separable from the other.
