Description

"At a Department Store" depicts the modern Japanese department store (depato) — one of the defining institutions of Taisho and Showa urban culture, where Western goods, food halls, and spectacular window displays brought the wider world to Japanese consumers. Kawakami's interest in the contact between Japanese and Western material culture found the department store a perfect subject: the floors of imported goods, the Western-style cafes on the top floors, the elevator girls in their uniforms. His simplified style renders the commercial spectacle with affectionate humor.
