Description
This small card-size print titled "Autumn" is a miniature in both scale and ambition — a pocket-sized distillation of the season into a few carefully chosen marks and colors. Kawakami produced many such small-format works, which were exchanged as gifts and new year's cards among artists and collectors in the Japanese print community. The intimate scale requires all his compositional economy: autumn rendered in the fewest possible elements that still carry its essential character — a colored leaf, a cooled sky, the shortened afternoon light.
