$500–$4,000. Common subjects: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: As an early sosaku-hanga pioneer, Kawakami's prints have historical significance. His distinctive graphic style is collected.
"Still Life on the Grass Plot," from around 1927, is an early work that demonstrates Kawakami's engagement with the genre of still-life painting in an outdoor setting — objects arranged on grass rather than on a table or shelf. The outdoor still-life brought the domestic into nature, combining the observational precision of still-life with the atmospheric qualities of landscape. The grass plot as ground gives the composition an unconventional natural setting, reflecting the experimentalism of the young Kawakami developing his distinctive sosaku-hanga approach.
