$500–$4,000. Common subjects: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: As an early sosaku-hanga pioneer, Kawakami's prints have historical significance. His distinctive graphic style is collected.
"Village Landscape" presents the visual character of a Japanese village settlement — the clustered rooflines, the human scale of the buildings, the integration of the village into its surrounding agricultural or forest landscape — through Kawakami's simplified, structurally clear compositional approach. Village landscapes were among the subjects that grounded his work in observed Japanese reality alongside his historical fantasies about Nagasaki traders and cross-cultural encounters: the ordinary Japan of small communities living close to the land and to each other.
