Mount Fuji viewed from Hakone is a perennially popular subject that Shotei renders with characteristic atmospheric depth. Post-earthquake editions sell for $500-$1,500, with pre-1923 impressions at $1,500-$4,000. Fuji subjects appeal to the broadest possible collector base and tend to hold value well across market cycles.
Description
Mount Fuji rises in the distance beyond the mountains of Hakone, its snow-capped cone catching the light above layers of mist and cloud. The composition arranges the landscape in receding planes of color, from dark foreground foliage through middle-ground mountains in blue-gray to the luminous peak in the far distance. The eternal subject of Fuji is rendered with Shotei''s characteristic atmospheric sensitivity.
