

Pre-1923 Shotei prints are particularly prized because the Great Kanto Earthquake destroyed original woodblocks along with much of the Watanabe publishing house. Surviving pre-earthquake impressions carry a scarcity premium.
A full moon rises over the hillside at Sekiguchi, its silver light reflected in the still waters of a pond. Trees frame the composition, their dark silhouettes creating a natural window through which the moon is viewed. The graduated blue of the night sky deepens from pale near the horizon to deep indigo at the top, demonstrating Shotei''s mastery of atmospheric [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) printing.
