芝増上寺の雪
Pre-1923 Shotei prints are particularly prized because the Great Kanto Earthquake destroyed original woodblocks along with much of the Watanabe publishing house. Surviving pre-earthquake impressions carry a scarcity premium.
The grand gate of Zojoji Temple in Shiba, Tokyo, stands transformed by a heavy snowfall. Figures with umbrellas make their way through the deep snow, their forms dark against the white landscape. The warm red of the temple gate provides a striking contrast to the cool whites and grays of the snowy scene, creating one of Shotei''s most celebrated compositions.
