

Shotei produced a wide range of subjects throughout his career under publishers Watanabe and Daikokuya. Signed, sealed lifetime editions consistently outperform unsigned export-market copies.
The sunset glow at Tsukishima — the man-made island in Tokyo Bay that became a center of manufacturing and working-class life — transforms a utilitarian landscape into something unexpectedly beautiful. The industrial waterfront, silhouetted against the amber and crimson sky reflected in the bay, gives the composition an unlikely sublimity. Shotei's ability to find beauty in working landscapes alongside traditional scenic subjects was one of his most characteristic qualities as a [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) artist.
