Shotei produced a wide range of subjects throughout his career under publishers Watanabe and Daikokuya. Signed, sealed lifetime editions consistently outperform unsigned export-market copies.
Amidst the open ocean — beyond sight of land, the water extending to every horizon — a composition of radical simplicity asserts the sea's absolute dominance over the human perspective. Shotei's maritime subject reduces the world to sky, water, and perhaps a single vessel or wave-pattern, using the seascape genre to approach the kind of atmospheric abstraction that his sky and weather paintings reached from the land side. The ocean's featureless expanse challenged and liberated the print artist simultaneously.
