Shotei's landscapes are his most widely available works. Signed lifetime editions with strong color and condition represent good collector value. Post-earthquake reprints lacking signatures and seals are common and trade at lower prices.
Catalog number C29 shows a traveling peddler making his rounds through a snowy night — bent under his pack or cart, moving through empty streets between pools of lantern light, the snow falling around his solitary figure. Shotei's treatment of this itinerant figure combines the snow scene tradition with the Japanese fondness for images of the lone traveler persisting through adverse conditions. The peddler's continued movement through the night and cold gives the image its characteristic emotional charge — the pathos of work that does not stop for weather.
