Wisteria at Kameido

亀戸の藤

by Takahashi Shotei

Date:
c. 1925
Medium:
Color woodblock print

Typical Price

Cascading wisteria at Kameido Tenjin Shrine forms a purple canopy in one of Shotei's most colorful floral compositions. Post-earthquake editions bring $400-$1,200, while pre-1923 originals with the small circular seal reach $1,500-$4,000. Wisteria subjects are seasonally appealing and tend to attract collectors drawn to Shotei's botanical rather than atmospheric strengths.

Description

Cascading clusters of purple wisteria hang from an overhead trellis at Kameido Tenjin Shrine, their drooping racemes creating a curtain of flowers. Visitors view the famous wisteria display, another subject iconically treated by Hiroshige. Shotei''s version emphasizes the atmospheric quality of the light filtering through the dense canopy of flowers.
