Yukitori no Yoru — "Night of the Yuki-Tori" (Snow Birds) — renders a winter night scene in which birds associated with snow or winter weather move through a landscape under darkness. The poetic title suggests a mood piece rather than a documentary view, the birds and the night and the snow combined into an atmosphere of cold, beauty, and transience. Shotei's [kacho-e](/glossary/kacho-e) and landscape practices merge in this composition, the winter birds providing both ornithological subject and seasonal metaphor.
