Beauty（波枕）

A woman with elaborately pinned black hair kneels on a wooden veranda, wearing a striped black-and-gold outer robe over a red and peach-graduated kimono patterned with small pale blossoms; she holds a slender stick or pin in both hands, gazing downward with a pensive expression. Behind her, an open doorway reveals a grey interior, while to her left a paneled balustrade overlooks blue water where a masted sailboat drifts beneath a pale sky; a woven basket and a rolled white paper or scroll sit near her on the floor, and columns of Japanese calligraphy appear at upper right. Muted greys, indigo, ochre, and coral dominate the palette; this is Takehisa Yumeji's 1960 woodcut "Beauty (波枕)."
