Typical Price
$1,000–$6,000. Common subjects: $1,000–$2,000. Key value factors: Tanaka's exquisite farmhouse etchings are beloved by collectors worldwide. Since his death in 2019, prices have firmed. Traditional thatched-roof subjects are most popular.
Description
A house in the Banshu region (the area around modern Himeji in Hyogo Prefecture) is depicted behind a low earthen or stone wall, a characteristic feature of traditional rural residences that demarcated private space from the road. Tanaka's interest in such domestic boundaries — the subtle threshold between interior life and public world — recurs throughout his work. The low wall, softened by age and weather, and the structure behind it speak to the regional architectural traditions of western Honshu.
