$1,000–$6,000. Common subjects: $1,000–$2,000. Key value factors: Tanaka's exquisite farmhouse etchings are beloved by collectors worldwide. Since his death in 2019, prices have firmed. Traditional thatched-roof subjects are most popular.
An etching and aquatint from 1966 that reveals Tanaka's early mastery of seasonal atmosphere. The bare branches and diffuse light of late autumn — that liminal moment after color has faded but before winter's clean geometry arrives — create a tone of quiet desolation that would recur throughout his career. Trees stripped of leaves expose the underlying structure of a rural landscape in a way that spring and summer foliage conceals, and Tanaka makes this revelation the emotional core of the image.
