Description
This woodblock print presents a modern beauty, or bijin, rendered in the shin-hanga style that bridged traditional Japanese aesthetics with contemporary sensibilities. Terashima Shimei specialized in depicting women of the modern era, and this first in what may be a series shows a figure whose hairstyle, clothing, or posture signals the Taisho or early Showa period. The bijin-ga genre has roots stretching back to Edo-period masters like Kitagawa Utamaro, but shin-hanga artists updated the convention by portraying women in Western-influenced fashions or modern settings. Terashima's woodblock technique preserves the fine line work and layered color printing that characterize the genre, with delicate gradations on skin tones achieved through careful bokashi shading. The format demands precise collaboration between designer, carver, and printer to produce the subtle effects that make each beauty portrait convincing.
