Description
Anchored Sailboat - V1, documented through the [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e).org archive, departs from the [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) and historical subjects that dominate Tomioka Eisen's known output to engage the landscape and waterscape traditions of ukiyo-e. The motif of an anchored boat — a vessel at rest in harbor or coastal waters — carries a long history in Japanese printmaking, evoking quiet, transience, and the in-between moments of travel. The 'V1' designation in the title suggests this is one of multiple variants of the composition, a common practice in Meiji-era printmaking when popular designs were reissued or reworked. The work expands the picture of Eisen as an artist whose technical training in the Hokusai school equipped him to handle subjects well beyond his commercial specialty in beautiful-women pictures.
