Kotondo is best known for bijin-ga, but his complete oeuvre includes actor prints and other figure subjects. His small corpus of only 21 designs ensures that all authenticated period impressions carry collector interest and scarcity premiums.
From the 1980 posthumous edition, this print depicts a woman in autumn — the season suggested by the warm bokashi gradations and atmospheric mood characteristic of Kotondo's seasonal bijin-ga. The "12 Aspects of Women" series uses the passage of seasons as a structuring principle, locating women's lives within the natural rhythms of the Japanese year. Autumn brings a particular quality of light and a particular emotional register — contemplative, gently melancholy — that Kotondo renders with characteristic economy.
