This is among Kotondo's most celebrated compositions. Kotondo created only 21 bijin-ga designs (1927–1933), and the original woodblocks were destroyed before WWII, making any original period impression extraordinarily rare. "Kamisuki (Hair Combing)" set the artist record at $72,500 at Christie's New York in 2019.
A woman spreads her freshly washed hair to dry, the long dark tresses fanned out around her. The contrast between the mass of black hair and her luminous skin creates a dramatic visual effect. The theme of hair — its care, its beauty, its sensual associations — is one of the central preoccupations of Kotondo''s art, and this print ranks among his most accomplished treatments of the subject.
