Description
A kabuki actor in female costume — the onnagata tradition — is captured in stage makeup and formal dress, the theatrical persona so complete that the underlying performer seems to dissolve into the role. Kotondo's circa-1954 kabuki prints belong to a late phase of his career when he returned to the theatrical subjects of his Torii school heritage after the long creative silence of his middle years.
