Kotondo's bijin-ga are prized for their psychologically intimate portrayals of modern Tokyo women. With only 21 designs and original woodblocks destroyed, all genuine 1930s impressions are scarce. Sotheby's estimated "Summer Geisha" at $8,000–$12,000 in 2023.
Numbered 52 from an edition of 100, this impression of Kotondo's celebrated Nap design records the 1930 composition in its posthumous form. A woman reclines in the drowsy state of utatane — an unplanned, mid-day sleep rather than deliberate rest. Kotondo's mastery of the reclining figure is evident in the natural distribution of the body's weight, the slight parting of the lips, the softening of every deliberate posture into relaxation. The edition preserves the original keyblock design with new color printing.
