Kotondo is best known for bijin-ga, but his complete oeuvre includes actor prints and other figure subjects. His small corpus of only 21 designs ensures that all authenticated period impressions carry collector interest and scarcity premiums.
A second version of the Obi Sash design from 1929, this impression may differ from the first in colorway, background bokashi, or subtle compositional detail. Kotondo issued multiple versions of certain designs, adjusting the palette or printing technique to explore different atmospheric effects within the same composition. The act depicted — a woman tying her obi — remained constant across versions, while the mood could shift from warm to cool, intimate to formal, through adjustments in the printed color alone.
