Kotondo is best known for bijin-ga, but his complete oeuvre includes actor prints and other figure subjects. His small corpus of only 21 designs ensures that all authenticated period impressions carry collector interest and scarcity premiums.
A 1941 woodblock print commemorating the memorable stage performances of Yoshimura Ijuro VI — an actor known for particular interpretations of female roles in the onnagata tradition. Kotondo renders the performance through ink and color on paper, capturing the actor's stage persona in the heightened register of theatrical portraiture. The work belongs to the long tradition of actor prints (yakusha-e) that the Torii school had sustained since the Edo period, and Kotondo's late contribution to this tradition demonstrates his continued engagement with the kabuki world.
