Description

A coastal subject — likely showing a stretch of rocky or sandy shore, perhaps the Pacific or Sea of Japan coastline that figures repeatedly in Yoshida studio work. Toshi produced numerous sea-themed prints during his career, including dawn fishing fleets, breaking surf, and tidal reflections. Mokuhanga seascapes traditionally rely on bokashi to render the gradation between water and sky, with separate blocks carrying wave patterns and foam. The relationship between a fixed shoreline and continually moving water made the subject a useful test of registration and atmospheric printing — a challenge Toshi inherited from his father Hiroshi, whose Seto Inland Sea series of 1926 codified shin-hanga's approach to coastal light. This print continues the studio's observation of Japanese maritime geography, situating Toshi within both the meisho-e tradition of place-portraits and the shin-hanga commitment to translating travel experience into the woodblock format.
