Description
A second design under the same title — likely a variant printing, alternate state, or paired composition. Yoshida frequently issued multiple states of the same subject, exploring different palettes or blockings; [surimono](/glossary/surimono)-style variations and reissues were a recognized practice in twentieth-century Japanese printmaking. The umbrella subject again invites careful registration of the umbrella's segmented panels and the surrounding figure or environment. Toshi's printers operated from the family workshop in Shimoochiai, Tokyo, where blocks for many editions were preserved and re-pulled over decades. Given the shared title, this version may show a different season, time of day, or vantage on a recurring genre theme. Within his oeuvre, such pairings reflect the studio's ongoing documentation of weather, atmosphere, and everyday life — a continuation of the [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) impulse to capture the changing moods of place.
