Clear autumn sky over a mountain temple, from the series "Picture Book of Chinese Poems (Toshi gafu no uchi)"

Totoya Hokkei composed this surimono around 1825 as part of his series "Picture Book of Chinese Poems (Toshi gafu no uchi)," which visualizes celebrated verses from the Chinese classical canon. The print evokes a clear autumn sky stretching over a mountain temple, a recurring image in Tang dynasty poetry that became a touchstone for later Japanese painters and printmakers. Hokkei renders the scene with the disciplined economy he absorbed from his teacher Katsushika Hokusai, founder of the Hokusai school, distilling the literary mood into a tightly composed image suitable for the surimono format. The series allowed Hokkei to demonstrate his ability to translate erudite Chinese subject matter into pictorial form for an Edo audience that prized literary sophistication. Surimono were commissioned by kyoka poetry clubs as private deluxe prints to mark seasonal occasions and special events, and their texts typically combined a striking image with comic thirty-one-syllable poems by club members. By the mid-1820s, Totoya Hokkei had become one of the most sought-after surimono designers in Edo, rivaling his teacher in the quantity and quality of his output for these private commissions. The Art Institute of Chicago, which preserves this impression, holds an extensive collection of early nineteenth-century Japanese prints that document the rich surimono tradition. The technical refinements visible in the work, the careful color gradations of the sky, the embossing that gives subtle dimension to the temple architecture, the metallic accents that catch the light, all attest to the luxurious production standards that distinguished surimono from commercial nishiki-e and made them prized objects in the educated society of late Edo.
