A [triptych](/glossary/triptych) from 1895 depicting the Japanese military's capture of the fortress at Niuzhuang (Gyusojo) during the First Sino-Japanese War — one of the key engagements of that conflict, in which Japanese forces overcame the fortified city on the Liao River. The Sino-Japanese War (1894–1895) generated enormous popular interest in Japan, and Chikanobu was among the most prolific producers of battle imagery. His castle-capture triptych would combine the established compositional tradition of warrior prints with the specific military details of modern warfare.
