A woodblock-printed [oban](/glossary/oban) [triptych](/glossary/triptych) from 1890 depicting the Ueno Shinobazu horse races — one of Chikanobu's several images of this popular Meiji sporting event at the famous Tokyo park. The horse races at Shinobazu attracted fashionable crowds and imperial notice, and their documentation by major print artists reflects both the sport's social importance and the print market's appetite for images of the new leisure culture. The triptych format provides the panoramic scope appropriate to a racing scene with horses, jockeys, and spectators.
