Koitsu's atmospheric night and temple scenes are his most sought-after subjects. Doi Hangaten first editions (1930s) are the most desirable; Watanabe editions are more common.
Maizuru Harbor on the Sea of Japan, a deep-water naval base since the Meiji period, becomes at night a composition of industrial and natural sublime held in careful balance. The harbor's lights reflect across the dark water, silhouetting vessels at anchor against the faint glow of the port. Koitsu renders the night harbor with the graduated darkness he mastered over his career, transforming what might be merely a documentary view of naval infrastructure into an image of atmospheric power.
