"Picture of Kusunoki Tamonmaru Conquering the Old Badger" (1860) depicts a son of the legendary loyalist warrior Kusunoki Masashige subduing a tanuki—the shape-shifting raccoon dog of Japanese folklore. The badger was traditionally associated with trickery and illusion, and a hero who could defeat one demonstrated supernatural discernment alongside martial prowess. Yoshitoshi's early print combines the warrior tradition with the folklore of supernatural animals in a manner that would remain a constant feature of his work throughout his career.
